about

Nancy Wallace's “January / 2000 Miles” is one of two 7"'s released as part of the 2014 (and second) edition of the Snowflakes Christmas Singles Club. Each single, limited to 500 copies and pressed on snowwhite vinyl, features an original and an interpretation of a existing Christmas song.

It may seem a strangle title for a Christmas song, but still, British folk singer Nancy Wallace's 'January' is just that. 'January' is a fragile and beautiful song, sounding like a longlost gem from the 1960s UK folk scene, about missing your friends and family and longing to be re-united with them at Christmas time. And this year, Christmas will be celebrated in January, as that is when you will see them again.

On the flipside, we find another song about a loved that is being missed a Christmas, '2000 Miles'. Originally written by Chris Hynde for Pretenders-guitar player James Honeyman-Scott, '2000 Miles' was a big hit for her band The Pretenders at Christmas 1983. Nancy has stripped down the song to its bare essentials, and with just her voice, sweet but with a touch of sadness, and an acoustic guitar, turns it into a touching folk song. The 7” comes in artwork done by Canadian painter – and Nancy's husband – Trevor Kiernander.

British folk singer Nancy Wallace, born into a family of folk musicians in Suffolk, first came to notice as a singer with The Memory Band, being featured on self-titled debut album of the band (2004) and the band's second album 'Apron Strings' (2006). Later, she joined the ranks of The Owl Service. Nancy's solo debut came in 2005 with the 'Young Hearts' EP, a wonderful collection of disco classics set to simple folk arrangements. In 2009, Nancy Wallace released her first album, 'Old Stories', a mixture of traditional English folk songs and Nancy's own compositions, on Midwich Recordings. The album met with much applause: 'one of the purest voices on the folk circuit' , 'a substantial debut' (Mojo), 'one of the first highlights of 2009' (BBC), 'balances traditional and modern folk music brilliantly', 'one of the most warming and friendly singing voices' (sonicdice.com) and 'one of the finest folk vocalists of her generation' (Music Week).

Nancy continued to record and tour with The Owl Service and as a solo artist and released a new 7” in February 2014, as part as the 'You. Should. Listen.'-series on UK label Stone Tape Recordings. The 7” featured two beautiful new compositions of Nancy, 'You Restless Skylines' and 'Pockets'. In October, Nancy has moved from east London, where she has been living for many years, to Canada.
